Common Name(s): Clemen’s Sphinx
Ecology: Adult description: This is a small (26-37 mm forewing length) sexually dimorphic species (1). The males of this species are often not attracted to light, and are seen more in the late afternoon. The yellow hindwing of the male makes it easily separable from other species. Both sexes have an overall yellow-brown forewing ground color, with dark black margins. Superficially, the female can resemble Sphinx gordius/poecila, but generally lacks a white discal spot and the white antemedial line on the hindwing is poorly developed on the dorsal surface giving it a shortened appearance (1). Larval description: L5: The larva is quite similar to Sphinx gordius. There are 7 white lines on the abdominal segments each bordered with a purple line. The horn is bicolored, black on the top and yellow at the base. There are often white spots on the body which help separate this species from Sphinx gordius.
