Common Name(s): Vine Sphinx
Ecology: Adult description: A medium sized sphingid, usually about 42-49mm FW in length (1). It closely resembles Eumorpha fasciatus and Tuttle notes the best way to separate the two is to examine the hindwing. In Eumorpha fasciatus, the hindwing has a pink outer margin whereas in Eumorpha vitis only the anal angle of the hindwing is pink (1). The forewings of this moth are quite well patterned. The base color is a dark brown. It has several thick lighter brown lines running through it and several veins on the outer wing margin are outlined in this light brown color as well. The forewing of this moth lacks a brown costal edge. Larval description: L5: This larva is generally green or red in color. Much like other Eumorpha larvae, this larva can have patches of white on the abdominal segments which are usually bordered with a black line. There are usually between 1-6 white patches. Unlike other Eumorpha larvae, this species tends to not have as much black speckling. Host plants: Click here to load this Caspio Cloud Database
