Common Name(s): Laurel Sphinx; Fawn Sphinx
Ecology: Adult description: This is a medium sized (42-48mm forewing) moth (1). It is another very distinctive moth in the genus because it is totally brown in color. Generally the area more toward the forewings top edge is darker brown and the remainder of the wing is lighter brown. The hindwings have a cream area between 2 black lines. Larval description: L5: Arguably the most identifiable Sphinx larva in our region. The larva has a distinctly blue horn with black granules. There are yellow and black abdominal streaks that border the yellow spiracles. The combination of the blue horn and yellow and black streaking is diagnostic.
